Nepal is a small, landlocked country nestled between India and China, celebrated for its incredible diversity and natural beauty. It’s home to Mount Everest, known locally as Sagarmatha, the world’s highest peak at 8,848 meters, and the birthplace of Lord Buddha in Lumbini, attracting visitors from around the globe. Nepal’s cultural richness shines through its over 100 ethnic groups and 120 languages, each adding to the vibrant tapestry of its traditions.

The Nepali language, which developed in the Sinja Valley of Karnali Province between the 10th and 14th centuries, is believed to have originated from ancient Sanskrit. Today, it unifies the country’s diverse communities, spoken alongside more than 120 other languages.

Nepal celebrates many colorful festivals, including Dashain and Tihar, which bring families together with rituals and decorations, and Chhath, honoring the Sun God, especially in the southern plains. Gaura Parva, celebrated in Darchula, Baitadi, Doti, and Dadeldhura, marks the marriage of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, symbolizing unity in diversity. Bhume Festival in Rukum highlights the importance of agriculture, animal husbandry, and nature’s resources, connecting people to their environment.

In addition to its cultural wealth, Nepal holds the world’s second-largest freshwater resources, further enhancing its natural allure. These elements together make Nepal a unique destination for pilgrims, adventurers, and those drawn to its rich cultural heritage.

Where we are from !

The Far-Western Development Region, also known as Sudurpashchim Pradesh, is one of Nepal’s seven provinces. Located at the western end of the country, its headquarters was initially in Godawari, with a temporary headquarters in Dhangadi. This region is known for its rich cultural diversity and historical significance. It includes the following nine districts,  Achham, Baitadi ,Bajhang, Bajura, Dadeldhura, Darchula,  Doti, Kailali and Kanchanpur.

Kailali

  • Kailali, home to 500,000 people, is a culturally diverse district that brings together various communities, including the Tharu and Rana Tharu. The Maghi festival, marking the Tharu New Year, is celebrated with dances, feasts, and cultural performances. 
  • Kailali is also home to scenic landmarks like the Karnali Bridge, an architectural icon over the Karnali River, and Tikapur Park, which offers a relaxing environment.
  • Ghodaghodi Taal, a serene lake, is famous for its wildlife and natural beauty, while the Godawori Tourist Area draws travelers for its cultural and ecological attractions. Kailali’s cultural and natural beauty makes it a vibrant part of Nepal’s Far-Western Region.
     

Kanchanpur

  • Kanchanpur, with a population of approximately 450,000 people, is located in Nepal’s Far-Western Development Region and is known for its cultural diversity, natural beauty, and vibrant communities. The district is home to various ethnic groups, including the Tharu and Rana Tharu, who contribute to the area’s rich cultural heritage with their unique practices, traditional attire, and festivals.
  • Shuklaphanta National Park is a key attraction, famous for its grasslands and diverse wildlife, including Bengal Tigers and Swamp Deer. Other highlights include Bedkot Lake, a sacred site, and Brahmadev, a cultural hub near the Indian border. The district also honors local heroes at Bheemdatt Memorial Park.

Doti

  • Doti has a population of approximately 250,000 people and is historically significant as the seat of the Doti Kingdom, which is believed to have existed since the 13th century. It was one of the prominent principalities during Nepal’s early medieval period and played a crucial role in shaping the region’s history.

  • The district is known for its Doteli culture, which is reflected in the Doteli language, traditional attire, and unique festivals like Gaura Parva. Gaura Parva is celebrated with religious rituals, folk songs, and the performance of the traditional Deuda dance. With its historical importance and vibrant cultural traditions, Doti remains an integral part of Nepal’s far-western region.

Dadeldhura

  • Dadeldhura, with a population of 140,000, boasts historical and scenic landmarks. Amarghadi Killa, an ancient fort, highlights its strategic history, while Ghanaghasya Ko Ukalo offers steep terrain and stunning views. The district is also the birthplace of Sher Bahadur Deuba, a prominent political leader and multiple-term Prime Minister of Nepal.
  • Ghanaghasya Ko Ukalo in Dadeldhura is a scenic location known for its steep terrain and stunning views. Historically, it served as a strategic military site due to its high-altitude position, offering an advantage for observing the surrounding areas.  Today, Ghanaghasya Ko Ukalo remains a significant part of Dadeldhura‘s natural and historical heritage, attracting visitors for its beauty and historical value.

Baitadi

  • Baitadi, home to 419,000 people, is known for its cultural heritage and historical significance. The district features landmarks like Jhula Ghat, a serene spot popular with nature enthusiasts, and the Tripura Sundari Temple, a significant pilgrimage site. It is the birthplace of Sahid Dasharath Chand, a martyr in Nepal’s independence struggle, and has deep historical ties to the Chand Raja royal lineage.
  • The district is also famous for Patan, an ancient town known for its beautiful temples, palaces, and cultural landmarks that showcase Baitadi’s deep-rooted traditions. One of the most important religious sites in the area is the Tripura Sundari Temple, dedicated to the goddess Tripura Sundari which is a popular pilgrimage destination.

Darchula

  • Darchula, home to 190,000 people, blends cultural and religious significance with a strategic location at the intersection of Nepal, India, and China. Traditional practices, religious customs, and architecture in some areas reflect strong Tibetan influences.
  • The Kali River and Byas Valley are important religious sites, while Mansarovar Lake draws pilgrims from across the region. Darchula also sits at the crossroads of India, Nepal, and China, making it a strategically important region. The district’s culture is influenced by its proximity to Tibet, reflected in its architecture and traditions.

Bajhang

  • Bajhang, with a population of 250,000, is recognized for its rich cultural traditions and breathtaking landscapes.  The district has a rich history as an important market town for trade and commerce. 
  • One of Bajhang’s notable historical figures is Jay Prithivi Bahadur Singh, a former king who played an important role in the region’s development. The district is also home to the stunning Saipal Himal, a majestic mountain range known for its breathtaking views and challenging trekking routes, attracting adventure seekers and nature lovers.

  • With its unique blend of cultural heritage, historical significance, and natural beauty, Bajhang stands out as an important area in the Far-Western Region of Nepal.

Bajura

  • Bajura, with 210,000 people, is renowned for the Badimalika Temple, a major pilgrimage site located at a high altitude, which draws thousands of pilgrims during its annual festival in August.

  • The district also celebrates the Guranshe Jatra, a colorful festival showcasing traditional dances and songs, reflecting the region’s cultural richness. This festival reflects the deep-rooted customs and the communal spirit of Bajura‘s people.

  • With its blend of spiritual significance, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, Bajura is a unique and important destination in the Far-Western Region of Nepal.

Achham

  • Achham, with a population of 287,000 is part of Nirbachan Chetra No. 2, which includes parts of Bajura and Baitadi. It plays a key role in electing members to the Provincial Assembly and House of Representatives. Known for its historical landmarks and natural beauty, Achham features the Mangalsen Durbar, currently (under reconstruction), and the Baidyanath Temple, one of Nepal’s four major Shiva temples, located at the confluence of the Budhi Ganga and Saraswati rivers.

  • Ramaroshan, a popular tourist site, offers 18 meadows with views of Mount Api, Mount Saipal, and the Budhiganga basin. The area also hosts diverse wildlife, including Nepal‘s national bird, the Danfe.

These districts represent the cultural and historical diversity of Nepal’s Far-Western region, showcasing a blend of indigenous customs, historical significance, and vibrant festivals.

Far Western Nepalese Society - California

FNS-CA (Far-Western Nepal Society, California) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare and betterment of the Nepali community residing in California, particularly those hailing from the Far-Western region of Nepal.

Our Purpose:

1. Far-Western Nepalese Society, California is a non-profit corporation and shall be operated exclusively for cultural, educational and charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, or the corresponding section of any future Federal tax code.

2. Far-Western Nepalese Society’s purpose is to promote, protect, and celebrate religion, culture and custom of Far-Western region of Nepal in the U.S.

3. To work as a bridge between new generation and old to share culture, knowledge, skills, and tradition.

4. To support people and the Nepalese community in the USA in various ways like sports activities, literature, education etc.

5. To maximize our impact on current efforts, we may seek to collaborate with other non-profit organizations which fall under the 501(c) (3) section of the internal revenue code and are operated exclusively for health, cultural, educational and charitable purposes.

6. At times, per the discretion of the board, we may provide internships or volunteer opportunities which shall provide opportunities for involvement in said activities and programs in order to have a greater impact for change.
